“If BJP had run the government in the state during 2014-2019 without taking Shiv Sena with it, the administration and work would have been faster. Especially some difficult decisions could have been taken immediately, ”said former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Devendra Fadnavis in a program on Thursday. Fadnavis made the remarks during an online book launch event jointly organized by the Center for Policy Research and the Trivedi Center for Political Data at Ashoka University.
During the ceremony, Fadnavis chatted with Congress leader and former Union Minister Milind Deora and commented on the political situation in Maharashtra. During the conversation, Deora asked Fadnavis if he was interested in entering national politics. At that time, Fadnavis gave a positive answer. Can’t you leave the state and go to the Center as there is a power struggle with the same party with which you had formed an alliance to form the government? Deora asked the next question. During these five years, I often wondered why this was happening, ”he replied.
Speaking further, Fadnavis said, “Even though Shiv Sena was in power after the government took some decisions, it used to criticize itself as an opposition party.” “But after a while, you get used to it. I then went into a role where I would do what I wanted. Many decisions I made unanimously when I was in charge of my cabinet. I had to work harder for it. Often I had to take care of a lot of things behind the scenes. Meetings and dialogues often had to be held in order to reach a consensus on an issue. If there was a one-party government instead, the work would have been better and faster, ”said Fadnavis.
Fadnavis also criticized the alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress in the state as unnatural. But at the same time, he said, the politics of alliance in the state would continue for the next 10 to 20 years. I never thought that Shiv Sena and Congress would come together, said Deora while talking about the alliance in politics. Deora also said that such an alliance would have to be decided due to coercive politics and that such an alliance would continue as long as the BJP was strong.

Deora also expressed concern over the political thinking behind a unanimous discussion on an issue. He recalled how all the MPs in Navi Mumbai had met the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2005 on the issue of Navi Mumbai Airport. Speaking on the subject, Fadnavis expressed concern over the growing ‘political untouchability’ in politics in the last 10 to 20 years. Fadnavis recalled that former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee used to say that a political opponent should not be a political enemy. The situation in Maharashtra is still good. But in some states in the south and north, opponents in politics have become enemies. Fadnavis also said that all parties should come together and reflect on the issue and bring about a comprehensive discussion on the issue.
